Join Ryan, a young Autistic man who followed his dreams and discovered his own inner power while he trained to represent his country at the Special Olympics. This powerful story about the Autism experience, as seen through Ryan’s eyes, is sure to change the conversation about Autism and create a greater understanding of the possibilities available to those living with the challenges of mental disabilities.
Diagnosed with Autism at age 4, Ryan Kealy, now 27, has navigated his life dealing with discrimination, misunderstanding, and bullying. He dealt with all of this while he worked constantly to make sense of a chaotic and, at times, cruel world. An avid comic book lover, Ryan was drawn to the superheroes contained in those pages and they inspired and instilled in him a strong desire to fight against injustice. Not solely the injustice that he experienced himself, but that of those around him as well.
Ryan’s powerlifting journey began more than 8 years ago in Kamloops, B.C. when he began working with his trainer, Jordan Sernaggia. Ryan’s dedication and hard work led him to winning a national championship in February of 2023 where he lifted an impressive combined weight of 577.5 kilograms. But Ryan didn’t stop there, he has also garnered much attention as an athlete at the global level, winning both Silver and Gold medals on the world stage.
Despite Ryan’s accolades, world-class athlete status, and his place on Canada’s Special Olympics Team, Ryan is less concerned with winning medals and instead thrives on improving himself and others. In doing so, he has become an inspiration and has motivated other disabled athletes to become the best that they can be. In addition to the athletes that Ryan has inspired, he also has an impressive knack for changing the lives and perceptions of seemingly everyone who crosses his path. This includes, but is definitely not limited to, our own film crew who have witnessed first-hand Ryan’s humility and desire to ensure that everyone in his orbit and beyond feels seen and supported.
It goes without saying that as a powerlifter, Ryan is super strong but his power for compassion and caring for others is absolutely unmatched. His journey to the Special Olympics in Germany has become one that has inspired, created better understanding, and even changed perceptions of those who live with and face the challenges of Autism and mental disabilities.
I would describe it as both a blessing but also a curse. It just makes me learn things a little differently and talk differently. Sometimes I sound weird to people and it’s not easy, I get that. I learn as I go.

This powerful and important film could not have progressed this far without the unwavering support and hard work of the production team and our financial supporters. These people believe in and understand the inherent value that will come from the completion of this film, its message, and the possibilities of what it can achieve. It is because of them and the knowledge of how this film will be able to impact the members of the disabled community and how they’re perceived, that we are able to tell this story and create change and understanding in an engaging and powerful way.

Like many of us, I had no real idea what Autism was.
All I knew was that those with Autism and mental disabilities were different and that they had a limited capacity in the world, as the word disability would suggest. (I have since learned to dislike the use of that term). I existed in a space where my lack of knowledge and understanding left me feeling unsure and awkward about Autism and those who live with it.
Everything changed for me when I first heard Ryan speak. I instantly recognized him as an articulate and well-spoken young man, a man who also happened to have Autism. I did not have any inclination then, that the journey I was about to embark on and the knowledge I would gain, would change my life forever.
As I began building a relationship with Ryan and his mom, I was taken on a journey of discovery. I listened to their hopes, dreams, struggles, and disappointments as they shared a glimpse into their world. Over time I recognized many traits that Ryan and I had in common and excitedly discovered our similarities. As our work together continued, I felt a change in my own consciousness, it was a subtle shift at first, barely recognizable, and it slowly nibbled at my inner most thoughts. I soon realized I was starting to feel more comfortable with myself; with my strengths and my weaknesses. I was also becoming more honest with myself.
Like so many of us, I suffer from my own mental health struggles. And like so many, I kept those struggles with Complex PTSD, anxiety, and depression a deep secret. I saw these things as a weakness of character, something that I should be ashamed of.
What I learned through Ryan is that you need to accept yourself, to embrace who you are, and in fact, celebrate it. I no longer saw my struggles as something that I should be ashamed of. Instead, I came to see them as a strength, one that has given me an insight into the human experience that many are not afforded. In short, while working with Ryan, I have become a better human being.
Those with Autism may interact with the world through a different lens but they don’t hide behind social constraints. They are genuine, accepting, inclusive, and loving, without reservation.
Through this film, I was able to capture Ryan and witness him embrace who he is and celebrate his uniqueness. I believe Ryan’s inspirational story will change the conversation around Autism.
As a film maker, I am humbled and honoured that Ryan has entrusted me as the messenger to deliver to the world his amazing, triumphant, and personal story.
